Monitoring System for Light Barriers

Monitoring System for Light Barriers

Introduction

  In this project a professional light barrier fault monitoring system was developed, to observe the behavior of light barriers such as those found in buildings and escalators. The project was carried out in 2002-2003 at the company Rudolph Logic Systems GmbH located in Hildesheim-Germany. The company was dealing with the development and production of electronic assemblies for customers in the fields of measurement, safety, lighting, telecommunication technologies, control systems as well as sensor technology.

Purpose

  The system was used by the quality assurance, to monitor the behavior of photoelectric sensors over a period of time before they got shipped to customers. This was necessary due to legal requirements for electronic safety devices. In addition, the system included a hardware test device that was also developed in parallel to provide the possibility testing the light barriers in real time.The application was able to provide the following options:

  • Simulating an error on a specific light barrier

  • Choosing different predefined error codes

  • Enabling and disabling the transmitter or receiver

  • Setting up the simulation interval ran continuously (running in a loop from the first light barrier on, running once or continuously without jumping back to the first light barrier

Development

  • Windows NT 4.0

  • Visual Studio 6.0

  • C++, Assembly, MFC library

  • Microchip PIC18F452 micro-controller

  • Language of the user interface: German
